If the EPUB has no fixed print pagination, the tool starts with an estimated page count and lets you replace it with the page total shown by your own reader.

How the progress estimate works

The reading time tool provides estimates based on word count and an average reading speed. This is a helpful guide, but your actual pace may vary.

For the catalog, the median word count is about 55,000 words, which translates to roughly 239 minutes (about 4 hours) of reading. However, books range from very short (under 10,000 words) to very long (over 120,000 words), so the time can vary widely.

Short and Quick Reads

If you have a short time, look for books labeled 'quick' (27 titles) or 'short' (28 titles). These are typically under 30,000 words and can be read in a couple of hours.

Medium and Steady Reads

For a more substantial read, consider 'medium' length (22 titles) or 'steady' time (19 titles). These often take 2 to 4 hours.

Immersive and Marathon Reads

If you want a long commitment, look for 'immersive' (43 titles) or 'marathon' (3 titles) reads. These can take over 5 hours, and some may exceed 10 hours.

Using the Reading Tracker

A Page-Based Plan for Steady Progress

The Reading Tracker records progress in pages, with a current page, total pages, and a daily page goal. It does not track minutes or sections; the focus is on pages. For books without a fixed page count from the catalog, the tracker estimates pages by dividing the word count by 250, which is the configured words-per-page value. You can replace that estimate with the total from your own reading app or edition.

Setting a Daily Goal

The default daily goal is 20 pages, but you can change it to match your schedule. The tracker then estimates how many days remain by dividing the remaining pages by your goal and rounding up. For example, if you have 200 pages left and read 20 pages a day, you will finish in 10 days. If you read 50 pages a day, that drops to 4 days.

A concrete example: The White Moll — Key Ideas to Explore has about 91,000 words. With 250 words per page, that is roughly 364 pages. If you set a goal of 20 pages a day, the tracker will estimate about 19 days to finish. If you can manage 30 pages a day, it becomes about 13 days. The tool helps you see the trade-off between daily effort and completion time.

Adjusting the Total Page Count

Because the catalog does not provide page counts, the initial estimate may not match your physical or digital edition. If your edition shows a different total, you can enter that number in the tracker. The estimated remaining time is then recalculated proportionally: estimated minutes times remaining pages divided by total pages. This keeps the plan accurate to the edition you are actually reading.

For instance, if your edition of The White Moll has 400 pages instead of 364, the tracker will adjust the remaining time and finish date accordingly. This is especially useful for books with large print or wide margins, where the page count can vary significantly from the word-count estimate.

Tracking Progress Without an Account

The Reading Tracker stores your progress history in the browser's localStorage, so you do not need an account. You can update your current page after each reading session, and the tracker will show how many pages remain and the estimated finish date. This is a simple way to maintain momentum, especially for longer books that might otherwise stall.

The tool is not a social platform or a gamification engine; it is a practical aid. By focusing on pages, it gives you a concrete measure of progress. For readers who are reading a short story or an epic novel, the tracker helps you plan and sustain your reading.
